At Bradenton yesterday, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said the door “will continue to be open” for Brian Reynolds to come to agreement on a contract extension. Reynolds has already rejected a reported $76 million five-year contract offer and Cherington said he hopes to have “more of a chance to talk about it” with his star centerfielder.
Andrew McCutchen worked out for the first time yesterday, stretching, taking swings in the batting cage and shagging flies in right field.
It was Grapefruit League Media Day yesterday, and in video posted by the MLB Network, manager Derek Shelton talked about rules changes, young prospects Endy Rodriguez and Quinn Priester, and Brian Reynolds. Shelton says the different makeup of the Pirates has heightened expectations for the 2023 season.
The Pirates’ full squad is scheduled to report to camp on Monday. The first exhibition game is against Toronto on February 25th.
