The Pirates announced yesterday they signed catcher Kevin Plawecki to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. The 31-year-old hit .220 with one home run and 13 RBI in 63 games last season between Boston and Texas. If he breaks the major league roster, he will earn $1.5 million.
They also officially announced that pitcher Caleb Smith signed a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training.
Several Pirates pitchers will head to Bradenton today for early workouts in preparation for this year’s World Baseball Classic. They are David Bednar, who will pitch for Team USA; Roansy Contreras, who will pitch for the Dominican Republic; and Duane Underwood Jr. for Puerto Rico.
Those not taking part in the tournament will report on Wednesday.
