GIRLS BASKETBALL
For the second time in a week, one of Indiana’s star girls basketball players hit the 1,000 career point mark, but it came in an upset loss. Eve Fiala scored 23 points for Indiana, but the Indians dropped a 58-52 Section game to Plum. It was Indiana’s first Section loss of the season. They’d beaten Plum by 30 points back on January 16th. Cassandra Boyer was also in double figures for Indiana, scoring 10 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Derry’s Nate Papuga scored 22 points to lead the Trojans to a 60-58 nail biter over Homer-Center. The Wildcats’ Nash Budner scored 16 points, Angelo Alexander had 15, and Michael Krejocic has 12. Derry sprinted to a 21-7 lead after one quarter and Homer-Center trailed, 55-43 heading into the fourth quarter before mounting an inspired comeback that came up just short.
HOCKEY
At the S&T Bank Arena last night, Norwin topped Indiana, 5-2. Alex Thomas had the hat trick for the Knights and Dom Cerilli added two goals. Thomas opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period, at the 9:08 mark. Indiana’s Sam Barley tied the game on a blazing backhand shot at the 11:07 mark of the second period, the 9th goal of the season for Barley. Philip Bell got the assist. But a little over five minutes later, Thomas gave Norwin the lead again with his second goal. Cerilli then opened the scoring in the third period with his first goal, just 1:12 into the period before Indiana’s Gabe Nettleton scored at the 10:32 mark, taking a brilliant pass from Alex Wood after some strong work along the wall by Garrett Goodrich. Wood and Goodrich got the assists on Nettleton’s 8th goal of the season. Thomas and Cerilli then each scored goals for Norwin, Thomas at the 7:56 mark and Cerilli just 41 seconds later to set the final score at 5-2.
WRESTLING
United’s District 6 champion wrestling team dropped a state tournament match to Saucon Valley last night, 42-21.
United’s winners included Zack Travis by decision, and Jacob Sombronski, Chloe Stiles, and Colton Henning, all by fall.
RIFLE
Indiana’s shooters took part in yesterday’s WPIAL Individuals. Rylee Warfel finished 62nd, Sarah Genchur 67th, Andrew Beatty 75th, Gavin Dicken 78th, and Ryan Shaffer 81st. McGuffey’s Riley Dunn finished first.
