The Penguins returned to action last night at PPG Paints Arena, refreshed from a nine-day layoff for the NHL All-Star break, and they made it count against the defending Stanley Cup champs. Here’s Paul Steigerwald.
The game-tying goal late in the third period was credited to Bryan Rust after the puck glanced off his skate, then hit off Colorado goaltender Pavel Francouz.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the Penguins embraced the post All-Star break motivation with only 32 games left in the regular season.
Sullivan liked the team’s energy after two lackluster periods.
Defenseman Kris Letang says the Pens knew the Avalanche would come right at them, and they did.
Goaltender Casey DeSmith stopped 41 of 42 shots in the game. That’s a lot of shots, but he says his defensemen kept the ice in front of him clear.
Forwards Kasperi Kapanen and Josh Archibald were both activated from injured reserve and played last night. Goaltender Tristan Jarry was placed on injured reserve. Jarry and injured defenseman Jan Rutta both skated with their teammates in the optional morning skate.
The Penguins are off to California to take on the Anaheim Ducks Friday night. Pittsburgh is tied with the Islanders for fifth place in the Metro Division, a point behind the Capitals.
