The Pitt Panthers start the second half of their ACC schedule tonight at North Carolina, a team they beat, 76-74 on December 30th in Pittsburgh.
Pitt comes into the game at 15-7 and 8-3 in the conference. The Tar Heels are 15-6 and 7-3. They sit a half-game in back of third place Pitt in the ACC.
The Panthers record has not gotten them into the Top 25. In fact, they’re not even close, tied with Arkansas for 14th among the teams receiving votes but not in the rankings.
Coach Jeff Capel is not upset about that, because ultimately, the rankings do not matter when it comes to making it into the NCAA tournament.
North Carolina began the season ranked number one in the nation, but they quickly fell out of the Top 25 when they lost four straight games after a 5-0 start. The Tar Heels are currently tied with New Mexico for the fifth position among teams receiving votes.
Tipoff tonight is at seven o’clock. We’re on the air on WCCS at 6:30.
