The Penguins lost to one of hockey’s worst teams last night on home ice, falling to San Jose, 6-4. Pittsburgh now enters the All-Star break with nine days of rest to somehow try to climb out of a season-long fog that has left them in fifth place in the Metro Division.
The Pens looked to be headed into the first period intermission with a 2-1 lead after power play goals by Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, but the Sharks tied the game on a goal by Erik Karlsson at 19:53 of the period. The two teams each scored two goals in the second period, with the Penguins get a short-handed tally from Ryan Poehling and Malkin’s second goal of the game.
Logan Couture scored twice for the Sharks in the third, getting the game-winner at 15:35 off a bad clearing attempt by the Penguins’ P.O. Joseph. Casey DeSmith initially stopped Couture but Rickard Rakell crashed into his goaltender, allowing the puck to slide into the net for the goal. Couture then added an empty-netter to seal the win.
The Penguins next play on February 7th at home against the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche.
