Steelers team president Art Rooney II tells Steelers.com’s Missi Matthews in his end-of-season interview that even though the team missed the playoffs, he liked the progress it made after a terrible start. The Steelers started the season 2-6 before going 7-2 in their final nine games.
Rooney told Matthews:
…the Steelers were a better team at the end than they were at the beginning of the season.
…he wants Mike Tomlin to stay on as coach of the team, despite refusing to speculate on Tomlin’s contract status. The coach has two years left on his current deal after having completed his 16th season running the Steelers.
…Kenny Pickett justified his selection as the Steelers number one draft pick last spring, and showed impressive grittiness.
…TJ Watt’s pectoral muscle injury showed what a difference-maker he is for the Steelers’ defense.
Rooney also said the Steelers have a lot of work to do to identify and sign the free agents they hope to keep, and he has no concerns about moving forward into the NFL Draft without the now-retired former general manager Kevin Colbert.
