The Penguins and Capitals hooked up in a tense battle last night in Washington and for the fifth times in their last six games, the Pens needed extra time to decide the game. Paul Steigerwald has the outcome.
Coach Mike Sullivan liked the intensity of the game.
Pens captain Sidney Crosby feels the team can still play better hockey.
Winger Bryan Rust says the Pens are playing pretty good hockey, but they’re not quite “there” yet.
The Capitals got shootout goals from Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom. The Penguins only goal in the shootout came from Rickard Rakell, as Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were stopped by Washington goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Casey DeSmith stopped 43 of 45 shots in regulation and overtime and one of three in the shootout.
The Caps now lead the Penguins by one point in the race for the top Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pens play San Jose tomorrow night at home before getting nine days off during the NHL All-Star break. Crosby is the only Penguins All-Star this year.
