BASKETBALL
There were a couple of Heritage Conference showdowns last night as the top girls teams in the East and the West met each other. At the Homerdome, West leader River Valley jumped out to a big first quarter lead and knocked off defending conference champion Homer-Center.
Ava Perischetti led the way for the Panthers, scoring 9 of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter to set the tone and controlling the tempo of the game from the point guard. She was a force on the boards and also harassed the Wildcats into a number of turnovers, including 8 in the first quarter.
Panthers coach Ricc Brown said maintaining a playoff mindset is key during this long stretch of games.
In the East, Penns Manor handled previously undefeated Portage, 48-38. Trailing 10-5 after one quarter, the Comets outscored the Mustangs 13-5 in the second quarter to take an 18-15 lead into the half. After each team scored 15 points in the third quarter, Penns Manor took control in the fourth with a 15-8 advantage and got the win, just days after losing to Portage by 23 in the Central Cambria tournament. Deja Gillo led Penns Manor with 16 points and Alyssa Altemus had 15. Ali Wozniak had 11 and Alex Chobany 10 for Portage.
In a doubleheader at Indiana High, Kennedy Catholic downed the Indiana girls, 42-38. Bella Antonacci led Indiana with 17 points. The Indiana boys took down Greensburg Salem, 63-48. Gavin Homer scored 25, Stanford Webb 11, and Evan Brocius 10 for Indiana.
The United girls routed West Shamokin, 49.24.
Cambria Heights drubbed Northern Cambria, 66-34
Marion Center’s girls beat DuBois, 49-46 in a non-conference game. kaelee Elkin led the Stingers with 18 points. Lydia Miller scored 15, and had 9 steals.
RIFLE
Indiana rifle got its first win of the season, downing Plum, 757-27X to 744-23X. The top shooter for Indiana was freshman Sarah Genchur with a 98-6x.
WRESTLING
River Valley’s Junior High wresters beat West Shamokin, 60-21 with wins by fall for Hunter Adair, Kira Watt, Brody Houser, Chris Clawson, Tanner Flickenger, Michael Wano, Zeke Doak, and Dakoda Sprague.
