The Penguins put up a valiant effort in the NHL Winter Classic yesterday in Boston, but in the end it added up to just another loss, their fifth in a row. Paul Steigerwald has the report.

Goaltender Casey DeSmith had to replace the injured Tristan Jarry in the first period after Jarry took a shot to his knee. He said it took a while to settle in.

Kris Letang was not going to play in the game with his undisclosed injury, but he also had to leave the team yesterday following the death of his father. Chad Ruhwedel returned to the lineup and skated in a defensive pairing with mark Friedman, who was on the ice replacing Jeff Petry.
After returning for just one game, forward Ryan Poehling was out of the lineup again with an undisclosed injury.
The Penguins visit Las Vegas on Thursday night, facing off against the Golden Knights at 10 PM, and on Sunday they are in Phoenix to play the Arizona Coyotes.
