GIRLS BASKETBALL
In a game heard on WCCS, Homer-Center crushed Conemaugh Valley, 70-26 at the Richland Holiday Tournament. The Wildcats were led by Macy Sardone, who scored 27 points and was 5-for6 from beyond the three-point line. Molly Kosmack added 18 as Homer-Center dominated in all aspects of the game and Anna Cutshall and Alaina Fabin each had 11. Homer-Center will play host school Richland, a 63-36 winner over Shade, in tonight’s championship game.
River Valley blasted Franklin Regional 61-37 to win the Hempfield Holiday Tournament. Ava Perischetti led the Panthers with 25 points, including 13 in the first quarter when they vaulted to a 26-2 lead. Hannah Artley scored 13 for River Valley.
Katie Kovalchick scored 18 points, Eve Fiala had 11, and Jayla Peterson 10 as Indiana nipped Peters Township, 55-54 in the consolation game at the Latrobe tournament.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Three of the four teams in the boys draw at the Richland tournament are from the Heritage Conference. Homer-Center was beaten by Richland, 59-33, after the Rams outscored the Wildcats 22-2 in the third quarter. Caden Vitalie led Homer-Center with 15 points.
In the other semifinal, conference foes Portage and West Shamokin hooked up, with the Mustangs’ defense holding the Wolves to no field goals for a span of over nine minutes at one point and Portage grabbing a 62-41 win. Trae Kargo scored 23 for Portage, including seven three-pointers. Braydon Rodgers had 15 for West Shamokin.
United won its third straight Boswell Jaycees Tournament, winning the title game 60-57 over North Star. For the second straight game, four Lions were in double figures, led by Brad Felix with 21 points. Dylan Dishong had 14, Tyler Robertson 11, and Joe Marino 10. Felix and Dishong made the all-tournament team and Felix joined his father, Joe, a 1988 North Star grad, as the only father/son combo to win tournament MVP.
River Valley dropped a tough one to Summit Academy in the title game of the Apollo-Ridge tournament. The final score was 53-52 as Kiron Douglas hit the game-winner with 1.2 seconds left. Jayden Whitefield scored 16 for the Panthers and Cole Kennedy-Citeroni had 12.
