The Penguins have gone from being one of the NHL’s hottest teams to a team that can’t find a way to win. Last night against Detroit, they blew a big lead and suffered their fourth loss in their last five games.

Jason Zucker had two goals and the Penguins also got goals from Drew O’Connor and Jeff Carter. The Red Wings fortunes changed in the second period after they changed goaltenders and backup Magnus Helberg stopped Sidney Crosby on a breakaway. Detroit then scored two goals in the second period and two more in the third to tie the game and force the overtime. Two of the goals came on power plays, breaking the Penguins seven-game streak of not allowing a goal when down a man. They’d killed 22 straight penalties until last night, when their PK was only 2-for-4.
The Penguins are right back on the ice tomorrow night when they host the New Jersey Devils, and they will follow that game with the Winter Classic, the outdoor game against the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park on Monday afternoon.
The Pens yesterday recalled defenseman Ty Smith and forward Drake Caggiula from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and placed forwards Josh Archibald and Ryan Poehling on injured reserve, both with undisclosed ailments. Defenseman Chad Ruhwedel missed last night’s game with an undisclosed injury and was replaced by Mark Friedman.
