The Pirates have traded infielder Diego Castillo to the Arizona Diamondbacks for right-handed pitcher Scott Randall. The D-Backs took Randall in the 7th round of the 2021 draft. He was 6-7 with a 3.82 ERA, 104 strikeouts, and only 25 walks last season pitching in High-A.
Castillo hit only .206 last season but did have 11 home runs and he could play all four infield positions plus outfield. The only positions he did not play besides pitcher this past season were shortstop and catcher. He had been designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for free agent catcher Austin Hedges, who signed a one-year contract with the Bucs last week.
Relief pitcher Nick Mears, who was waived last week to make room for outfielder/first baseman Connor Joe, was claimed by the Texas Rangers.
