A day after agreeing to contract terms with veteran former Cleveland catcher Austin Hedges, the Pirates yesterday pulled off a trade with Colorado, acquiring an outfielder/first baseman who is very familiar to them, their own former number one draft pick Connor Joe. The 30-year-old was taken by the Pirates in the 39th round of the 2014 draft and was traded to Atlanta for Sean Rodriguez in 2017. With the Rockies last season, he hit .238 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 111 games.
The Rockies got right-handed pitcher Nick Garcia, a 2020 third-round draft choice who was 4-4 with a 3.66 ERA in 25 appearances with High-A Greensboro last season.
The Pirates designated reliever Nick Mears for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Joe.
