The Pirates have agreed on a one-year $5 million contract with veteran free agent catcher Austin Hedges, who played the last two years in Cleveland. He hit .163 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 105 games last season. He’s a career .189 hitter.
The only catcher currently on the Pirates’ 40-man roster is Endy Rodriguez, their minor league player of the year, who will be expcted to start the season still in the minors.
