On a night when the Penguins honored Evgeni Malkin for playing his 1,000th game, Malkin makes the difference for the Penguins, whose winning streak continues.
Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Coach Mike Sullivan said the night belonged to Malkin.
Malkin says it was a special night, after being joined on the ice by his wife and son for a ceremony before the game and then winning it in the shootout.
Defenseman Jan Rutta had the Penguins other goal, leading off the scoring with a wrister at the 2:09 mark of the first period. The Flames tied it with 8:37 left in the second period on a goal by Dillon Dube. Tristan Jarry saved 33 of 34 shots in regulation and overtime. The Penguins got shootout goals by Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell in addition to Malkin’s game-winner.
After four seasons as the Penguins’ skating and skills development coach, Ty Hennes yesterday was promoted to assistant coach. Hennes will continue his duties as the Pens’ primary coach working with injured and rehabbing players, and will also continue to be behind the bench on game nights, as he has been since 2019.
New Jersey’s 13-game winning streak was snapped last night by Toronto, which took a 2-1 win in Newark. Three Devils goals were disallowed in the game, and things got dangerous as New Jersey fans lobbed beer cans onto the ice. The Penguins 17-game streak in the ’92-’93 season remains the longest NHL winning streak ever.
