During his weekly news conference yesterday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the task at hand for next Monday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts is containing the efforts of quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Jonathan Taylor.
Before he discussed the Colts, however, the coach reflected on Sunday’s poor showing against Cincinnati.
Tomlin said there were some positives from the game, but the team won’t win many games when the offense and defense are lackluster.
Tomlin said Indy’s offensive attack centers around Taylor, who carried the ball 22 times in each of the past two games. In those games, he’s racked up 231 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He said keeping Taylor’s workload to a minimum is crucial.
Tomlin added that the Steelers are preparing for a formidable passing game by Ryan, citing his quick and intelligent pocket presence.
The Steelers’ injury report was short yesterday. Tomlin said center Mason Cole is still recovering from a foot injury, but if participation in practice this week increases, he’s likely to play Monday night.
Wide receiver Miles Boykin left Sunday’s game with an oblique injury, while running back Jaylen Warren left with a hamstring. Tomlin said Warren’s injury was “not significant” but his status for Monday is questionable.
Both will be evaluated based on participation.

The NFL released its Modern Era semifinalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2023 Tuesday afternoon and two Steelers greats advanced to the next round of voting.
Wide receiver Hines Ward qualified as a semifinalist for the seventh straight year, while linebacker James Harrison made it in just his first year on the ballot. Joining them on the ballot are Colts legends Dwight Freeney and Reggie Wayne, former Bears returner Devin Hester, and former Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith.
Modern Era finalists will be revealed later in January.
The Rams made a surprising move in the backfield yesterday, waiving running back Darrell Henderson, Jr., after an injury limited him in Sunday’s game against the Saints. He led the team with 283 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Carolina announced that Sam Darnold will start under center Sunday against the Broncos. Meanwhile, P.J. Walker is dealing with a high ankle sprain and Baker Mayfield threw two interceptions on Sunday.
