After absorbing three straight losses, to West Virginia, Michigan and Virginia Commonwealth, Pitt struggled yesterday against winless Alabama State, trailing by 12 with 5:49 left in the first half before finally kicking in to catch and pass the Hornets and come away with a 73-54 win.
The Panthers won the second half, 42-20, to secure the win, led by Blake Hinton with 18 points, Nike Sibande with 17, and Nelly Cummings with 10.
Pitt played without guard Jamarius Burton and with Greg Elliott hobbled. Also, William Jeffress missed the game with a toe injury that coach Jeff Capel said would require surgery, adding the Jeffress is probably lost for the season.
Center John Hugley returned to the lineup after suffering a knee injury last week and played 19 minutes.
The Panthers will play Fairleigh Dickinson tomorrow night at The Pete.
