The Pirates yesterday protected catcher Endy Rodriguez, pitcher Mike Burrows, third baseman Jared Triolo, and pitcher Colin Selby from the Rule 5 Draft. They had to expose a number of other prospects, including outfielder Matt Gorski, who last week was named their Willie Stargell Slugger of the Year in the minor leagues.
Others who could be drafted by other teams are first baseman Malcom Nunez, infielders Andres Alvarez, Maikol Escotto, and Dariel Lopez, catcher Blake Sabol, and pitcher Tahnaj Thomas.
To make room on the 40-man roster for the protected players, the Bucs designated for assignment pitchers Tyler Heineman, Manny Bañuelos, and Junior Fernandez, and catcher Tyler Heineman.
