The Penguins had and lost the lead on three occasions Saturday night in Montreal, two of them in the third period, as they dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to Montreal.
The Penguins erased a 1-0 deficit on second period goals by Jeff Petry and Rickard Rakell but Montreal tied it in the same period to make it 2-2 after two.
In the third period, Evgeni Malkin put the Penguins up, 3-2, on a goal 3:19 in, but the Canadiens scored less than a minute later to tie it again. Then at the 14:02 mark, Brock McGinn scored on a wrist shot off a feed from Jeff Carter on a two-on-one breakaway as the teams skated in a three-on-three. But again, Montreal scored less than a minute later, on a power play goal by Sean Monahan.
Mike Hoffman scored the game-winner just 1:03 into extra time for the Canadiens.
