The Penguins return home tonight to take on the Los Angeles Kings at PPG Paints Arena. The Kings started the season with two straight losses but have won three in a row since then on a five-game road trip that will end on Saturday in Washington. The Pens won their first two games at home but lost in overtime in Montreal on Monday.
Coach Mike Sullivan was asked after practice yesterday about his lines and the young Penguins stars such as Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust, and Brian Dumoulin, who have played under the wings of the superstar trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang.
Sullivan talked about Malkin’s line, with wingers Rust and Jason Zucker, and said they have become a gritty trio that’s very difficult to play against.
The Penguin’s top three lines are comprised of guys who have played together for a long time, but the fourth line, made up of Ryan Poehling, Brock McGinn, and Josh Archibald, is new to the team and to each other.
Sullivan said center Teddy Blueger will be a game-day decision tonight but would not say that Blueger is completely recovered from his undisclosed injury. Blueger is unlikely to play after starting practice yesterday in a full-contact jersey but switching to a non-contact jersey. Sullivan said it was more a team decision to switch jerseys for work on special teams.
The Pens and Kings face off shortly after 7 o’clock tonight. The airtime on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel is at 6.
