At his weekly news conference yesterday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin discussed the team’s performance on Sunday against Buffalo and previewed this week’s matchup against Tampa Bay.
Tomlin opened the conference saying better days are coming, but they will not happen overnight.
One of the questions on everyone’s mind was if Tomlin would go forward with making changes to the coaching staff and/or the team’s roster, more specifically moving on from offensive coordinator Matt Canada. The coach expressed confidence in Canada’s play-calling, but said confidence is “irrelevant.”
While taking questions from reporters, Tomlin was asked to address the comments made by former Steelers safety and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark.
Earlier this week, Clark made a comment saying that, while he respects Tomlin and the Steelers organization, the team “gave up” and “didn’t play like winners” on Sunday.
Tomlin said he isn’t worried about the noise, and he knows his team played poorly against the Bills.
One of the more positive topics discussed during the news conference was the emergence of rookie running back Jaylen Warren, who has slowly become a favorite among fans opposed to former first-round pick Najee Harris. Tomlin said Warren will continue to get more looks.
Tomlin gave updates on the pile of players on the injury report. Cornerbacks Cam Sutton and Ahkello Witherspoon are each dealing with hamstring injuries. Sutton was ruled out for now but both will be evaluated in the coming days.
Terrell Edmunds, Pat Freiermuth and Levi Wallace are all dealing with concussions, but Tomlin says he feels Edmunds is nearing the inching closer to coming out of protocol.
And safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is still dealing with a knee injury and will continue to be evaluated.
In other Steelers news, the team worked out five players yesterday, including former PITT star wide receiver Taysir Mack, who had more than 2,000 receiving yards with the Panthers. Others who worked out include receivers Ja’Marcus Bradley and Josh Malone, and cornerbacks Duke Dawson – a former second-round pick for the Denver Broncos – and Lavert Hill.
The Steelers look to snap their losing streak on Sunday as they welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Acrisure Stadium.
