MLB PLAYOFFS
The Philadelphia Phillies came out as the only road team to win in the first days of divisional play yesterday as they took down the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves, 7-6. Nick Castellanos went 3-for-5 with a home run and sealed the Phillies win with a diving catch in the ninth.
The Houston Astros won, 7-6, in walk-off fashion against the Seattle Mariners. Yordan Alvarez hit a game-winning, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth.
The New York Yankees opened their series with a 4-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians. First baseman Anthony Rizzo’s two-run home run proved to be the difference maker in the game.
The Los Angeles Dodgers rounded out the day’s games with a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres. Julio Urias allowed three runs while striking out six over five innings for the Dodgers.
The NLDS continues today starting at 4:35 with the Phillies/Braves, while the Padres/Dodgers battle at 8:37 p.m.
TYLER SKAGGS
A former employee of MLB’s Los Angeles Angels is getting 22 years in federal prison for his role in the death of Angels’ pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Eric Kay was sentenced Tuesday in Texas after being found guilty of providing the drugs that led to Skaggs’ death in 2019. Coroners concluded the 27-year-old Skaggs had a mix of alcohol, fentanyl and oxycodone in his system. Kay was the team’s communications director at the time.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The U-S Women’s soccer team was upset by Spain 2-0 in an international friendly in Pamplona. Laia Codina opened the scoring in the 39th-minute while Esther Gonzalez netted a second-half goal to seal the win. The Spanish side rolled out a reserve squad as 15 players refused a call-up amidst a coaching dispute. The U-S women lost to England 2-1 late last week and it’s the first time the team has surrendered multiple goals in consecutive games since 2019. The U.S. will face Germany in its next friendly on November 10th.
