GOLF
For the second straight year, Indiana’s Trevor Todd and Harrison Martineau have qualified for the WPIAL Triple-A golf finals. Todd shot a 5-over 76 and Martineau a 77 yesterday in the first round of the championship at Champion Lakes. Todd is tied for 9th place and Martineau is tied for 11th, heading to the second round next week at Allegheny Country Club. Central Catholic’s Rocco Salvitti is in first place after shooting 71. Indiana’s Hunter Martin shot 93 and missed the cut. The top fourteen finishers from yesterday combined with the round next week will move on to the state championship at Penn State.
DISTRICT 6
At the District 6 boys golf championship yesterday at Scotch Valley, West Shamokin’s Alex Talmadge fired a 79 and finished in a third-place tie, two strokes off the pace of St. Joseph’s Tim Peters and stroke behind Bishop McCort’s Brennan Karalfa. Talmadge will move on to the state Double-A championship October 17th and 18th at Penn State. West Shamokin’s Sean McCullough just missed making the finals, finishing a stroke behind the cut line at 84.
West Shamokin won the Double-A team title by three strokes over Bishop McCort. The top four scores count in the team total. In addition to Talmadge’s 79 and McCullough’s 84, Logan Geist shot an 89 and Gunnar Shoop had a 92. The Wolves advance to the District 6-8-9 sub-regional next Wednesday at the Ebensburg Country Club.
VOLLEYBALL
Homer-Center shut out Northern Cambria, 3-0 by scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 25-17. For the Wildcats, Alaina Fabin had 5 Aces, Meegan Williams had 17 kills, Molly Kosmack had 8 blocks (with 5 assists and 3 singles), and Macy Sardone had 31 assists.
Portage edged West Shamokin, 3-2. West Shamokin won the Junior High match, 2-1.
United shut out Penns Manor, 3-0. The Lions’ JV won their match, 2-0.
CROSS COUNTRY
Both Indiana’s girls and boys raised their records to 5-1 yesterday with wins over Yough and Derry on Yough’s home course.
The boys won with perfect scores of 15-50 over both opponents, taking the top ten spots overall with its four seniors, Jacob Gill, Jon Berzonsky, Will Berzonsky, and Seth Weaver all crossing the finish line together, and all credited with a winning time of 19:38. Brennan Huff was also under 20, finishing 5th at 19:55. Rounding out the top ten were Indiana’s Jaiden Myers, Jacob Killeen, Tommy Kaufman, Joe Punford, and Colin Fry.
The girls were 15-50 winners over Yough and 22-33 winners over Derry. Addy Fry placed 2nd overall in 21:52, Emmy Davis was 3rd, Belinda Lin 4th, Rachel Gill 6th, Chloe Hain 7th, Kaylee Onder 11th, and Emily Ferraro 13th.
