Both Pitt and Penn State won non-conference games Saturday afternoon.
Pitt outran Rhode Island, 45-24. Izzy Abanikanda ran for 177 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Kedon Slovis returned to action after missing last week’s game at Western Michigan with an injury. Slovis was 20-for-27 passing for 189 yards. The Panthers also got an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown by M. J. Devonshire.
The Panthers will play their ACC opener next Saturday night (8:00) against Georgia Tech.
Penn State downed Central Michigan, 33-14. Sean Clifford threw three touchdown passes and ran for another and the Nittany Lions’ defense forced four turnovers from the Chippewas.
Penn State plays Northwestern next Saturday.
