One day after setting the franchise record for strikeouts in a season, Pirates batters struck out twenty times against the Mets, who broke open the game late yesterday.
Joe Block has the recap.
The Bucs 20 strikeouts set another franchise record and tied the Major League record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game. The team struck out 21 times in an extra-ining game against the Phillies in 1958. Thirteen of the fifteen outs recorded by deGrom were by strikeout.
Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes struck out twice. He says their strikeout frustration this season is not putting any pressure on them. They just have to do better.
Pitcher Johan Oviedo had control problems early in the game as the Bucs fell into a 3-0 hole. He hit Pete Alonso with a pitch, leading to the benches emptying in the second inning.
The Pirates are off today and will stay in New York for a two-game series against the Yankees starting tomorrow night. The Yankees’ Aaron Judge hit home run numbers 58 and 59 yesterday in their 12-8 win over the Brewers. He is two home runs away from Roger Maris’ American League record of 61.
