With first string quarterback Kedon Slovis out with an apparent head injury and second stringer Nick Patti hobbled by a leg injury, the Pitt Panthers still managed to force overtime yesterday, but fell to Tennessee in the Johnny Majors Classic, 34-27.
Volunteers QB Hendon Hooker threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 28-yard scoring toss to Cedric Tillman in OT.
Slovis was injured in the first half when he was sacked. He did not play the second half. Although Pitt did not disclose the nature of his injury, he appeared woozy after the play, on which replays clearly showed his head hitting the playing surface.
Patti injured his leg on a sack in the fourth quarter. Limping on one leg, he hit Jared Wayne for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 2:23 left in regulation to force the extra period.
The Panthers are 1-1 and will play on Saturday at Western Michigan.
