The Pirates dropped the final game of their six-game road trip yesterday.
Joe Block has the story.
The Pirates are off today and open a three-game weekend series against Toronto at PNC Park tomorrow.
Before the game, the Pirates called up Miguel Yajure from Indianapolis and they reinstated JT Brubaker from the paternity list after the birth of his son on Sunday. The team optioned left-handers Cam Vieaux and Eric Stout to Indy.
After being interrupted by covid-19 in 2020 and 2021 and by the labor dispute with team owners this year, Spring Training will return to normal next year. The Pirates yesterday announced their Grapefruit League schedule for 2023, starting with a home game in Bradenton February 25th against the Blue Jays and ending with a home game against the Twins on March 28th.
Spring Training next year will also be affected by the World Baseball Classic. Pitchers and catchers taking part in the Classic must report to their team on February 13th and position players on the 16th. Voluntary reporting date for the Pirates’ pitchers and catchers will be February 15th, and the 20th for position players. Mandatory reporting date for all players is February 25th. The Pirates will start the regular season at Cincinnati on March 30th.
MLB
Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa is away from his team due to an unspecified medical issue. The 77-year-old White Sox skipper will remain out indefinitely as he undergoes tests in Arizona. He was taken out of the dugout by team doctors on Tuesday. La Russa has won three World Series rings over his 35-year career and is second on Major League Baseball’s all-time wins list for managers.
ALTOONA
Altoona could get only six hits in a 4-0 loss to Akron last night. The Curve committed three errors. Liover Peguero had two hits, including a double, and catcher Endy Rodriguez had a double, caught a runner stealing, and picked another runner off first base.
The Curve have not announced a starter for tonight.
