In an unexpected move, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced this afternoon that they have signed head coach Mike Sullivan to a three-year extension.
General Manager Ron Hextall announced the deal shortly after 2 p.m. and he called Sullivan one of the top coaches in the NHL. He adds that Sullivan is “great leader that finds success through communication, honesty and accountability. We know that Sully is committed to continuing a winning culture here in Pittsburgh.”
In his time with the Penguins, Sullivan became the first American-born coach to win multiple Stanley Cups, the second coach since Toe Blake (1956-58) to win Stanley Cups in each of his first two seasons and first head coach to win back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships since Scotty Bowman, when he accomplished the feat with Detroit in 1996 and 1997.
Sullivan’s extension will begin after the 2023-24 season and will run through the 2026-27 season.
