Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is preparing his team for Sunday’s preseason finale against Detroit by mimicking a typical regular season week. That was the case again yesterday, as Tomlin wants to get his players accustomed to the routine.
The coach says it was good to fit into the regular season mold.
Quarterback Mitch Trubisky has found himself in a bit of an unexpected battle for the starting job with first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett. He says he feels he’s earned the job.
Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger attended practice for the first time since his retirement and even tossed the football around with wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who reported that Big Ben still had plenty of zip on the ball.
The Steelers claimed safety Elijah Riley off waivers from the Jets and released safety Donovan Stiner. Riley has also played for the Eagles after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Army in 2020, and he started seven of the Jets’ final eight games last season. He can play either of the safety positions and slot/corner as well.

Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson has passed away at age 87. He led Kansas City to a Super Bowl victory in 1970 and played for them for 14 years. He spent the next 33 years in the broadcasting booth, including a long-time stint as host of HBO’s Inside the NFL.
Dawson started his career as a fifth round draft choice of the Steelers in 1957 but languished on the bench for both Pittsburgh and Cleveland before jumping to the AFL in 1962 with the Dallas Texans, who later became the Kansas City Chiefs. He won three AFL titles, made seven pro Bowls and was a two-time All-Pro.
Former Chargers coach Don Coryell has been selected as the finalist for the NFL Hall of Fame in the Coach/Contributor category. He will be considered for induction into the Hall along with fifteen modern-era players and three senior candidates, Chuck Howley, Joe Klecko, and Ken Riley, in January.
