The Pirates jumped to an early lead but then stalled last night as they lost their sixth straight game.
Joe Block reports.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton says the Bucs’ hitters could not solve the Red Sox.
Shelton says Roansy Contreras struggled to find the strike zone.
Shelton says the veteran Rich Hill took advantage of the Pirates’ young hitters.
In order for Contreras to be added to the roster and start for the Pirates last night, the team designated reliever Austin Brice for assignment. They also optioned catcher Jose Godoy to Indianapolis and activated catcher Tyler Heineman from the injured list.
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk says Ke’Bryan Hayes is doing well in his recovery from back spasms and should be able to be activated next Tuesday, the first day he is eligible for reinstatement from the injured list. All-Star reliever David Bednar and fellow pitcher Dillon Peters are making progress toward their returns, but Bednar is going to take longer. Both are working out with a plyometric ball and should begin throwing a baseball either later this week or early next week.
Tomczyk also said starter Mitch Keller played catch with Shelton yesterday and did not appear to be injured after leaving Tuesday’s game with “shoulder fatigue.”
