The futility of the Pirates continued on Sunday as two defensive mishaps in the ninth allowed the Giants to win in walk-off fashion.
Joe Block has the unfortunate story.
The Pirates took the lead twice in Sunday’s game – once on a Bryan Reynolds three-run home run and the other on an infield single by Rodolfo Castro in the ninth. Derek Shelton said his guys play tough in these games, but they need to work on finishing them.
Shelton attributes these late-game struggles with having a lot of young players.
Reliever Wil Crowe said the team needs to put this rough road trip behind them.
During his radio show on WCCS yesterday, general manager Ben Cherington said that All Star closer David Bednar is “making steady progress” and is close to returning to the Pirates after dealing with a back injury. Cherington also said third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes will be evaluated today for a lower back issue. He said the team is optimistic that it isn’t serious, but they need a closer look.
The Pirates are off today and they look to break this cold streak on Tuesday as they face the Boston Red Sox at home.
