The Pirates survived a bungled double play ball in the 9th inning, thanks to the Diamondbacks making their own blooper on the basepaths, and the Bucs came away with a dramatic victory over Arizona last night.
Joe Block has the story.
The “successfully executed” rundown in the ninth inning happened with the bases loaded with D-Backs and no one out. On a grounder to third, Ke’Bryan Hayes threw to Rodolph Castro at second base, with one run scoring. Castro should have thrown to first to complete a double play, but Arizona’s Emmanuel Rivera was between second and third base and Castro threw to Kevin Newman covering third base to try to catch him in a rundown. Newman ran Rivera back toward second but Rivera stopped short of stepping on the bag because the runner from first was already there. Newman tagged him out before he could safely touch the bag. The Pirates then survived an Arizona challenge of the call.
Manager Derek Shelton says it was a total team win.
Shelton says everyone on the field had a hand in the win.
Eric Stout’s journey to his first-ever Major League save includes parts of eight seasons in the minors since being drafted by the Royals in the 13th round in 2014. Shelton says Stout has worked hard to make it to the big leagues after being acquired by the Bucs in June.
The four-game series concludes this afternoon in Phoenix. JT Brubaker [2-10, 4.49 ERA] pitches for the Pirates against D-Backs righty Merrill Kelly [10-5, 2.86 ERA]. It’s a 3:15 airtime, 3:40 first pitch on WCCS.
In his weekly injury report, director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that All-Star closer David Bednar has not resumed throwing yet but should soon as the inflammation in his injured lower back continues to go down. Bednar has been on the injured list since August 3rd.
Two players who went on the injured list on August 4th, pitcher Dillon Peters and catcher Tyler Heinneman, are slowly working their way back. Peters has not begun throwing yet but his inflamed left elbow is now asymptomatic. Heinneman has resumed hitting, throwing, and catching as he recovers from a strained groin.
