The Pirates fell behind big last night and their comeback fell short as they lost for the fourth time in five games on their ten-game road trip.
Joe Block has the recap.
Before last night’s game, the Bucs recalled infielder Rodolfo Castro from Indianapolis and optioned outfielder Cal Mitchell. Castro played second base and went 0-for-3 but created a bit of a media splash when he slid into third base in the fourth inning and his cell phone popped out of his back pocket. Manager Derek Shelton said Castro “made a general mistake” by forgetting he had his phone with him and it does not appear there will be any disciplinary action.
Game Three of the four-game series is tonight in Phoenix. Mitch Keller [3-8, 4.21 ERA] faces D-Backs lefty Madison Bumgarner [6-10. 3.96 ERA]. It’s a 9:15 airtime, 9:40 first pitch on WCCS.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona’s Luis Ortiz threw six innings and gave up only two hits while striking out eight Binghampton batters as the Curve shut out the Rumble Ponies, 6-0. Ortiz even threw an “immaculate inning”, striking out all three batters on just nine pitches. It was his second immaculate inning this season and only the fourth in Curve history.
Second baseman Aaron Shackelford was 2-for-4 with his 20th home run. Liover Peguero also had two hits and catcher Endy Rodriguez had an RBI double in his Double-A debut after being promoted earlier in the day from Greensboro.
Game Two of the series is tonight, with right-hander Kyle Nicolas on the mound for the Curve.
