Even though they were idle yesterday, the Pirates front office stayed busy as General Manager Ben Cherington traded two veteran pitchers for a pair of prospects.
The Pirates sent LHP Jose Quintana and RHP Chris Stratton to the St. Louis Cardinals last night in exchange for RHP Johan Oviedo and infielder Malcolm Nunez.
Nunez, the headliner of the trade, was ranked as the Cardinals’ No. 10 prospect by MLB Pipeline and slashed .255/.360/.463 with their Double A affiliate Springfield this season. The Pirates project him to be their future first baseman and designated hitter.
Oviedo struggled in the MLB after making his debut in 2020 for St. Louis and later transitioned from starter to reliever.
Quintana provided the Pirates with a serviceable veteran presence in the rotation this season. On the field, he went 3-5 with a 3.20 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 103 innings.
Stratton has been inconsistent in the Pirates’ bullpen as he posted a 5.70 ERA and a .270 batting average against this season.
The team has not said where Oviedo and Nunez will start their Pirates’ career.
The MLB Trade Deadline is set for 6 p.m.
Tonight, the Pirates return to action as they welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to PNC Park for a three-game series. RHP Bryse Wilson (1-6, 6.31 ERA) will start for Pittsburgh, while RHP Corbin Burnes (8-4, 2.31 ERA) goes for Milwaukee.
Airtime is 6:40 p.m. on WCCS 101.1 FM and AM 1160.
