The Pirates extended their losing streak to seven games after falling to the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-2, Sunday afternoon.
Joe Block has more on the game.
The Phillies roughed up Pirates starter J.T. Brubaker, as he gave up seven earned runs on 12 hits while collecting just four strikeouts. Dillon Peters gave up one run in one-and-one-thirds innings of relief.
Tyler Beede pitched three scoreless innings while giving up just two hits. He finishes July with a 1.64 ERA, according to MLB.com’s Justice delos Santos.
Kevin Newman went 3-for-5 with a double. Cal Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
The Pirates have off today and they welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to PNC Park tomorrow night.
On his radio show yesterday on WCCS, General Manager Ben Cherington gave some updates regarding the minor league and MLB rosters.
Cherington said that RHP Roansy Contreras has “no magic number (of starts)” before his return to the Pirates. He said the goal is to get Contreras back to the MLB by September and he adds it’s a similar process to Spring Training for him.
Cherington also commented on the demotion of rookie infielder Diego Castillo, which happened Saturday. He said the move was to get him in the game everyday.
MLB TRADE DEADLINE
The MLB Trade Deadline is set for 6 p.m. tomorrow night and its expected to be one of the busiest deadlines in recent history. Jose Quintana is expected to draw heavy interest across the league as he brings a 3.50 ERA over 103 innings pitched into Tuesday’s deadline.
Teams interested in the Pirates’ southpaw are the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
Other players drawing interest are Bryan Reynolds, David Bednar and Ben Gamel.
