The Pirates first round draft pick, Termarr Johnson officially signed his contract and took his first batting practice as a Pirate.
Johnson’s contract is worth $7,219,000, which is close to $214 more than the slot value for the #4 overall pick in the 2022 draft, and is the sixth highest bonus given to a high-school player in history. The Pirates have signed 18 of their 21 draft picks, and GM Ben Cherrington says he does not anticipate they will sign any more draftees.
Johnson came onto the national radar after hitting .417 with eight doubles, five triples and nine home runs as a junior at Mays high school in Atlanta. As a senior, Johnson was named the Atlanta Public Schools Player of the Year after hitting .561 with nine doubles, a triple, six home runs, 19 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.
