The Pirates fell behind early and could not generate any offense until it was too late in Chicago yesterday.
Joe Block recaps another loss to the Cubs.
With the loss, the Pirates fell behind the Cubs by a half-game in the NL Central standings after spending most of the season in third place in the division. The Cubs have won six games in a row. The Pirates have dropped three straight and four of the five games since the All-Star break.
The Bucs are off today and open a four-game series with the Phillies at PNC Park tomorrow night.
The Pirates yesterday announced the signings of four more draft choices. They are tenth round pick outfielder Tanner Treadway, 16th round choice catcher Nick Cimillo, and the 17th and 18th round selections, pitchers Jaycob Deese and Elijah Birdsong. Deese, a right-hander out of the University of Houston, was rated by Baseball America as having the “best fastball” in the draft this year.
The team’s first round choice, fourth overall, is infielder Termarr Johnson, who is still unsigned. That should get done this weekend.
MLB
The Yankees put All-Star outfielder Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day IL due to left Achilles tendinitis. Manager Aaron Boone says it flared up after the All-Star break.
Padres star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. took batting practice for the first time this season on Tuesday. He broke his wrist in the offseason and is expected to face live pitchers later this week.
Druw Jones, the second overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft two weeks ago injured his shoulder during his first batting practice with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Jones will miss the rest of the season if the injury requires surgery.
ALTOONA
Altoona lost for the third time in four games since the All-Star break, as Bowie jumped on Curve starter Carmen Mlodzinski for three runs in the first inning, on the way to an 11-5 win for the Baysox. Outfielder Connor Scott was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run for the Curve. First baseman Aaron Shackelford hit his 17th homer of the year and third baseman Jared Triolo was 2-for-4 with a double.
Game two of the series is tonight in Bowie. The Curve will start righty Aaron Shortridge.
