UPDATE: Due to morning thunderstorms, the action at the PA Youth Legion Western Regional has been moved back to this afternoon. The third place game will be at 1:30 and the championship game will be played at 4:00.
OUR ORIGINAL STORY:
Controversy marred the third day of the PA Youth American Legion Western Regionals yesterday, as S.W. Jack unexpectedly bowed out of the tournament on a ruling by the state director.
A morning storm in Homer City forced a game between Penn Trafford and Edinboro to be moved to the White Township Recreation Complex. Penn Trafford won that game, 15-4. Wesleyville then ended Brookville’s season, breaking a 4-4 tie with four runs in the 6th inning and grabbing a 9-4 victory.
In the third game, Murrysville saved its season with a 3-0 victory over Connellsville in just 90 minutes, handing Connellsville its first loss.
Then came the controversy. S.W. Jack of Indiana entered its game against Erie believing a win would get it into the 10 AM game today for the third and final seed in the state championship. S.W. Jack more than held up its end with a 22-4 thumping of Erie.
So in Pool A, there were three 2-1 teams: S.W. Jack, Murrysville, and Connellsville. The first tiebreaker was head-to-head. The second tiebreaker came into play and it was fewest runs allowed. Connellsville was the clear winner and therefore claimed Pool A. That left Murrysville and S.W. Jack vying for one final spot, and S.W. Jack had beaten Murrysville Saturday night in extra innings, but the state director ruled that the second tiebreaker of fewest runs allowed still applied and Murrysville gave up fewer runs in its three games than S.W. Jack had and was awarded the final slot.
So today’s matchups are a 10 AM third place game to determine the final seed in the state championships, with Murrysville taking on Wesleyville.
At 1 PM the Western Regional Championship will feature Connellsville (2-1) vs. Penn Trafford, (3-0). Penn Trafford is the defending Western Regional and State Champions.
