The Penguins’ two-year contract extension for winger Kasperi Kapanen will carry with it a salary cap hit of $3.2 million, the exact same cap hit as his former deal. Kapanen scored only 11 goals with 21 assists last season, and admitted candidly that his output let his team down. In the seven-game playoff loss to the Rangers, he had only three assists and no goals, and took 19 shots, tying Kris Letang for seventh in that category.
With a surplus of talent on the blue line, the Penguins will still be dealing before the season opens. They are currently more than $480,000 above the salary cap limit, according to capfriendly.com.
