The Pirates started the second day of the MLB draft yesterday by taking Notre Dame pitcher/infielder Jack Brannigan in the third round. The third baseman prefers playing the infield and the Bucs will start him there before possibly making him a two-way player as a pitcher. He can touch triple digit miles-per-hour with his pitching arm but has control problems.
The Bucs then drafted high school pitcher Troy Kennedy in the fourth round, Georgia Tech outfielder Tres Gonzalez in the fifth round, then more pitchers in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth rounds. Their final choice of the day was an outfielder in the tenth round.
Rounds 11 through 20 will happen today to complete the draft.
Dick “Ducky” Schofield, a member of the Pirates 1960 World Series champions, has died at the age of 87. Schofield backed up Dick Groat at shortstop for the ’60 Bucs and was 1-for-3 as a pinch hitter in the World Series win over the Yankees. He played eight of his 19 seasons in the major leagues with the Pirates, and also played for the Cardinals, Giants, Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Brewers. He retired after the 1971 season. Schofield passed away July 11th.
