Aaron Shackelford slugged a pair of home runs to help the Curve take down the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-2, last night at PNG Field.
Blake Sabol hit back-to-back home runs with Shackelford in the first inning to give Altoona an early three-run lead. Shackelford then hit his second of the game in the third to give the Curve an insurance run.
He finished the day 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Brendt Citta went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Richmond’s Tyler Fitzgerald hit a pair of solo home runs – one in the fifth and another in the eighth – to plate his team’s only two runs.
Nick Dombkowski earned the win in relief for Altoona after pitching four innings and striking out six. Starter Luis Ortiz did not factor into the decision, but pitched four shutout innings, also striking out six.
Tyler Samaniego notched his seventh save after holding Richmond hitless in the ninth.
Game five of the series is tonight with RHP Quinn Priester (1-1, 2.81 ERA) taking the mound for Altoona.
MINOR LEAGUE
Major League Baseball has agreed to pay $185 million to settle the federal class-action lawsuit filed by Minor League Players, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The lawsuit was filed in 2014 by former Miami prospect Aaron Senne and two other retired players, and it was for players who sought minimum-wage and overtime violations made by MLB teams.
As part of the settlement, MLB will allow teams to pay minor league players during Spring Training and in extended leagues, such as the Florida and Arizona Fall League, which was prohibited before.
This is part of an on-going effort to improve living standards for minor league players. The settlement is pending a judge’s approval.
