The Penguins locked down their first-round draft pick from this year’s draft.
The team announced this morning that they have signed defenseman Owen Pickering to a three-year, entry-level contract, and it begins when he turns professional.
Pickering stands in at 6-foot-4, 180 pounds and he spent the last two seasons with the Swift Current Broncos in the Western Hockey League, where he scored 11 goals and 42 points in 85 career games. He was named to the WHL Second All-Star Team after an impressive 2021-22 season, which saw him net nine goals, 24 assists and 33 points in 62 games.
The 18-year-old recently finished participating in the team’s development camp held earlier this week, and he was selected 21st overall by the Penguins in this year’s NHL Draft.
Financial terms weren’t announced, but entry-level contracts typically max out at $925,000 annually.
