A day after the Pirates’ bullpen shut down the Marlins, it failed them, and again it was their All-Star closer who struggled the most.
Joe Block has the story.
The series concludes today with an afternoon game in Miami. Former Marlin Zach Thompson [3-6, 4.38 ERA], who came to the Pirates in last winter’s Jacob Stallings trade, will start against Miami’s lefty Braxton Garrett [1-3, 4.33 ERA]. It’s an 11:45 AM airtime on WCCS.
Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that Bryan Reynolds will not participate in baseball activities until his strained right oblique is reassessed after the All-Star break. Tomczyk said top prospect Henry Davis is going to be shut down for several weeks to rest his left wrist injury. He’s not played since July 2nd.
Number three prospect Nick Gonzalez is out of his walking boot. He’s been out since May 31st with a heel injury, and may soon transition to Florida for a rehab assignment.
The Pirates will have the fourth overall selection in the MLB draft on Sunday evening, and the team has named former first baseman Kevin Young to represent them. The Bucs had the number one overall choice last year and chose Henry Davis.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona reliever Tyler Samaniego gave up two runs in the 9th inning yesterday and the Curve lost to Richmond, 5-3. Matt Fraizer had three hits for Altoona. Game three of the series is tonight at 6 in Altoona, with Aaron Shortridge starting for the Curve.
