Just a couple of days after he was drafted in the first round by the Penguins, defenseman Owen Pickering was on the ice as the Pens opened their five-day development camp at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. The team’s four other draft choices were also there, along with five undrafted free agents the team recently signed, two players on amateur tryout contracts. Also lacing up his skates was Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith, who had groin surgery after he was injured in the first game of the playoffs in May.
Pickering says the players were a bit anxious, knowing coach Mike Sullivan was in the building.
Pickering is tall and thin and he says he has a lot of work to do to get ready to play in the NHL.
The camp concludes with a scrimmage on Thursday. All of the sessions are open to the public.
