On Day two of the NHL draft, the Pittsburgh Penguins went with a “best available” strategy, and came up with several players at different positions.
The Pens drafted goalie Sergey Murashov in round 4, forward Zam Plante in round 5 and defenseman Nolan Collins and forward Luke Devlin in the sixth rounds. The Pens had already traded away their second and third round picks, and the seventh round pick went to the Florida Panthers in exchange for the Panthers seventh round pick next year.
Pens Director of Amateur Scouting Nick Pryor said that instead of taking the approach of finding players with different attributes that were needed, the team went with the best available approach and got players of different types in different positions, which is what they were looking for.
