The Pirates open a brief series with the Yankees tonight, but if Yankees fans show up and get a Bill Mazeroski Gold Glove bobblehead, we’ll hope they don’t trash it.
Here’s Greg Brown with a preview.
The Pirates’ lineup might look quite different tonight. Shortstop Kevin Newman is ready to come back after having been out since April 26th with groin and hamstring injuries. He’s played only 14 games this season and will likely be at second base on his return, according to general manager Ben Cherington, with Oneil Cruz continuing at shortstop. Newman yesterday hit a walkoff single in an Indianapolis win in which he went 3-for-5 with a walk and two RBIs.
On the Ben Cherington Show on Sunday on WCCS, the GM said Ben Gamel and Yoshi Tsutsugo should also be back from Indy during the two-game Yankees series and pitcher Dillon Peters might also return from his rehab assignment.
ALTOONA CURVE
After the shooting of Jayland Walker caused unrest in Akron, Monday’s 4th of July game between the Akron RubberDucks and Altoona Curve was postponed due to the mayor’s imposing a 9 PM curfew. The series will start tomorrow night, with first pitch slated for 6:35 PM.
