Pirates manager Derek Shelton says it was a solid all-around performance by the Bucs.
Shelton likes the chemistry of his young ballclub.
For tonight’s third game of the four-game series, the Pirates will promote right-hander Jerad Eickhoff from Indianapolis to get the start. He has a career Major League record of 21-32 with a 4.35 ERA in six seasons with the Phillies and Mets. This year with Indianapolis, Eickhoff is 4-3 with a 4.84 in 13 appearances, including six starts. Righty Keegan Thompson (6-2, 3.27 ERA) starts for the Cubs. It’s a 6:40 airtime on WCCS.
Injured Pirates regulars Kevin Newman, Josh VanMeter, and Yoshi Tsutsugo all began rehab stints with Indianapolis last night. Newman was 1-for-2 with a double. VanMeter was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Tsutsugo was 0-for-1 with a walk in a 7-4 win over Memphis.
The Pirates yesterday acquired pitcher Eric Stout from the Cubs in exchange for cash and assigned him to Indianapolis. Stout is a left-hander who’s been in two games for the Cubs this season, giving up two runs in 3-and-two-thirds innings. He’s also pitched for Kansas City, four years ago.
