The Steelers opened mandatory minicamp yesterday with their players wearing the new Guardian Cap, a soft shell astronaut-style helmet covering that is designed to protect against head injuries. A new NFL rule mandates the caps be worn by all linemen, tight ends, and linebackers when training camp begins and lasting until the second preseason game, but every Steeler wore one yesterday.

Other minicamp news involved wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who told reporters that he was just there to get his work done and was not focused on his contract situation. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is also seeking a new contract and said he would not be speaking about it publicly.
Coach Mike Tomlin said it was a good first day for minicamp, but there is a lot of work to do.
Tomlin said Diontae Johnson sets a great example for the team’s young receiving corps.
The Steelers released their training camp schedule. Camp will begin July 27th at St. Vincent College. Players must report the day before. There will be 18 practice days in Latrobe, with 17 practices at St. Vincent and the annual Friday Night Lights practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium. Most practices will be open to the public but you must have a ticket, which is free and available at Ticketmaster.
