The Pirates are riding a wave of momentum as they open a series with the Diamondbacks tonight.
Joe Block has a preview.
Veteran left-hander J.A. Happ has announced his retirement from baseball. Happ played for eight teams over 15 years in the Major Leagues, including three teams last season. He was a trade deadline acquisition for the Pirates in 2015 and went 7-2 with a 1.85 ERA in eleven starts to help the Bucs to the Wild Card game, which they lost to the Cubs.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona snapped its four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion last night, beating Bowie, 13-12 on the strength of a four-run 8th inning. The Curve sent thirteen batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the second inning, then their bats went silent until the 8th. Andres Alvarez was 3-for-5 with five runs driven in, including a three-run home run in the 8th. Catcher Blake Sabol was 4-for-5 and Aaron Shackelford was 3-for-5.
Game four of the series is tonight at PNG Field, with highly-touted righthander Kyle Nicolas on the mound for the Curve.
